Yugoslavia was actually a young country having been first formed after WW1 and then reformed after WW2. The country consisted of 6 republics, Serbia, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia Herzegovina, Macedonia, and Montenegro. The country became communist and was led by Marshal Tito from WW2 until his death on 4 May,1980.

Under Tito's dictatorship the six republics were united, and managed to get along reasonably well. After Tito's death all the old ethnic tensions began to surface again. Soon there was talk of independence among the republics with Croatia being the first to demand it. Slovenia declared independence shortly after Croatia.

Yugoslavia was still being held together and run by the republic of Serbia. Serbia did not want Croatia to gain independence because of the large number of Serbian people living there. Slovenia stood up against the Serbian led Yugoslavian army and after a 10 day war they prevailed. There were very few Serbians living in Slovenia and for this reason Serbia did not make a major effort to stop Slovenia's bid for independence. Slovenia then received recognition from the U.N. and their independence from Yugoslavia was complete. Although Slovenia was not the first to declare independence from Yugoslavia it was the first to achieve it. Croatia's battle for independence would go on much longer and evolve into the Bosnian war.
