Which of the twelve apostles of Jesus wrote the Gospel of Matthew, the first book of the New Testament?

Matthew the Apostle, also known as Saint Matthew and as Levi, was, according to the New Testament, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus. According to Christian tradition, he was also one of the four Evangelists and thus is also known as Matthew the Evangelist.

The New Testament records that as a disciple, he followed Jesus, and was one of the witnesses of the Ascension of Jesus. Later Church fathers such as Irenaeus and Clement of Alexandria claim that Matthew preached the Gospel to the Jewish community in Judea, before going to other countries.

The Gospel of Matthew was first anonymous: the author is not named within the text, and the superscription "according to Matthew" was added some time in the second century. The tradition that the author was the disciple Matthew begins with the early Christian bishop Papias of Hierapolis (c. AD 60–163), who is cited by the Church historian Eusebius (AD 260–340), as follows: "Matthew collected the oracles (logia: sayings of or about Jesus) in the Hebrew language (Hebraïdi dialektōi), and each one interpreted (hērmēneusen – perhaps "translated") them as best he could."

Writing the Gospel of Matthew was attributed to Matthew, the tax collector turned disciple. Three synoptic gospels and the book of Acts list Matthew among the twelve disciples, but only the book of Matthew explicitly says he’s a tax collector. All three synoptic gospels record an account of Jesus calling a tax collector to discipleship. In the book of Matthew, it calls him Matthew. In other writings, there is a man identified as Levi. It’s worth noting, however, that the apostles as a group include Matthew, and none of them include someone named Levi. Some scholars argue that two separate men exist; many other scholars believe Matthew was known by two names. He was called Levi because he belonged to the tribe of Levi. While tradition claims the Gospel of Matthew was written by Matthew the tax collector, there is good evidence for and against this claim.

From my bible reading I understand Matthew wrote the gospel of Matthew!

Poorly worded trick question. It was Matthew the Apostle who was known as Levi. This should have been included the question.

There is no definitive answer to this question. Levi is simply a commonly accepted academic theory and even more commonly rejected. Definitely asserting the actual authors of the synoptic gospels is like throwing darts at an imaginary dartboard while you are blindfolded and drunk.
