Instead of makeup, the band "Village People" wore costumes. The lead singer, originally Victor Willis, dressed as a police officer or a naval officer. The other members were dancers. Felipe Rose (Native American), Alex Briley (initially an athlete, then the soldier/sailor), Mark Mussler (construction worker), Dave Forrest (cowboy), Lee Mouton (leatherman/biker), and Peter Whitehead (an early songwriter for the group) were the starting members.

The names behind the costumes changed, however, as more dancers joined and others left. Even the lead singer changed, but it was always the cop that sang.

Some of their best-known songs are "Y.M.C.A.", "Macho Man", and "In the Navy". They were best liked in the late 70s, with their disco music. When the interest in disco started to wane, so did their popularity.

They still do small events, although some of the original members are unavailable.
