Jeff Chandler played the Native American Chief Cochise in three separate movies. "Taza, Son of Cochise", a 1954 American Western film, directed by Douglas Sirk was the third time Jeff Chandler played Cochise, following "Broken Arrow" (1950) and "The Battle at Apache Pass" (1952).

Chandler (Ira Grossel, b. December 1918 in Brooklyn, New York—d. June 1961 in Culver City, California of pneumonia) was an American actor, singer, and film producer best remembered for his portrayal of Cochise in the film, "Broken Arrow". Because of his performance in this film, he was nominated for an Oscar. One of Universal Pictures’ most famous male stars of the 1950s, Chandler also appeared in the films "Sword in the Desert" (1949), "Deported" (1950), "Female on the Beach" (1955), "A Story of David" (1960), and "Merrill's Marauders" (1962).

As a child in a Jewish family, Chandler was raised by his mother after his parents separated. He began acting in plays while studying at Erasmus Hall High School. Following a drama course at Feagin School of Dramatic Art i New York City, he briefly worked in radio and then went on to serve in a stock company as a stage manager and actor. In addition to his acting, Chandler was also known for his musical recordings.

On a personal note, he had a number of affairs—before, during, and after his marriage to Marjorie Hoshelle, with whom he fathered two children.
