"3rd Rock from the Sun" is an American sitcom television series created by Bonnie and Terry Turner, which originally aired from January 9, 1996, to May 22, 2001, on NBC. The show is about four extraterrestrials who are on an expedition to Earth. The extraterrestrials pose as a human family to observe the behavior of human beings.

Dick Solomon (John Lithgow), the High Commander and leader of the expedition, is the family provider and a physics professor at Pendelton. Information officer Tommy (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) has been given the body of a teenager and is forced to enroll in high school (later college), leaving security officer Sally (Kristen Johnston) and "the one with the transmitter in his head", Harry (French Stewart) to spend their lives as 20-somethings hanging out at home and bouncing through short-term jobs.

A number of popular actors were guests in one or more episodes of the series. David Caruso wasn't one of them. John Cleese (seasons 3 & 6) played Professor Liam Neesam, a hostile alien. Alan Cumming appeared in season 5, playing Angus "The Hole" McDuff, a hole expert. David Hasselhoff played a plastic surgeon in season 5.

Three of John Lithgow's six Emmy Awards have come from playing the lead role in "3rd Rock From the Sun". He said his role as Dick Solomon on the NBC sitcom in the '90s was a career highlight: "Six years of uninterrupted laughter and the most exhilarating collaboration I've ever been involved in between actors and writers."
