The Lefortovo Tunnel, which serves the capital city of Russia, is part of the Russian Federal Highways system. It takes vehicular traffic beneath the Yauza River in the Moscow suburb of Lefortovo as part of Moscow’s “Third Ring Road”. Cameras monitoring the tunnel’s interior have captured numerous accidents, many of them—but not all—in the winter. No casualty reports have been issued.

This section of the Third Ring Road originally was planned above the surface, but local residents objected, as the highway would have passed through the suburb’s historic district. Unfortunately for motorists, the roof of the tunnel leaks. Russian winters are notoriously cold, with temperatures that fairly routinely fall below -12 degrees Celsius (10 degrees Fahrenheit), and occasionally drop even deeper into the freezer. The water on the tunnel surface freezes and unaware motorists—particularly those who may be driving too fast for conditions—are prone to losing control of their vehicles on the ice.

The Third Ring Road is 3.2 kilometers long and 10 km in diameter. As access to it is limited in it sections, the Third Ring Road serves as a bypass beltway, designed to help motorists avoid congestion in more-crowded areas of greater metropolitan area. The city’s Garden Ring” takes traffic around the city center and the “Moscow Ring Road” is furthermost from the center. The Third Ring lies between them. A Fourth Ring is planned for between the Third Ring and the Moscow Ring Road.
