Which of these countries has the longest Adriatic coastline?
The Adriatic Sea is a body of water that acts as a divide between the Italian Peninsula and the Balkan Peninsula. The sea, which is an arm of the Mediterranean Sea, extends from the Strait of Otranto all the way to the Po Valley.
Albania, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Italy, Slovenia, and Montenegro have coastlines on the Adriatic Sea.
The Croatian coastline is the longest and has a length of about 1,104 mi (1776 km) (without islands) and is characterised by the intense colour and clarity of the sea.
Including the shorelines of the islands, the coastline extends to a length of about 3626 mi (5835 km). The most famous stretch is its southernmost region called the Dalmatian Coast which has limestone cliffs and islands such as Hvar and Korčula just offshore.
This section of the Adriatic Sea has an area of about 11,969 sq mi (31,000 sq km) with in excess of 700 islands, rocks and reefs. Most of the islands are limestone except for Brusnik and Jabuka which are volcanic. Some of the main rivers draining into the sea include the Drin, Po, Bojana, Neretva, and others.
The Adriatic sea borders the Italian coast for 776 miles (1249 km). The coastline is located on the eastern side of Italy running from the Gulf of Venice and Trieste in the north all the way to the southeastern tip of the country at the Capo d'Otranto in Puglia.
The total length of the Albanian coastline is approximately 246 mi (396 km) and the coastline of Montenegro approximately 155 mi (249 km).
