Introduced in the 1912 Stockholm Summer Olympic Games, the men’s decathlon event comprises 4 track and 6 field events, a total of 10 events lasting 2 consecutive days. The long jump is the first of the field events contested on the first day.

The winner is determined by the combined performance in all of the events. Performance is judged on a points system in each event, not by the position achieved. The decathlon is contested mainly by male athletes, while female athletes typically compete in the heptathlon.

On the first day the five events are the 100 metres, long jump, shot put, high jump and the 400 metres. On the second day the events are the 110 metres hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and the 1500 metres. Traditionally, all decathletes who finish the event, rather than just the winner or medal winning athletes, do a round of honour together after the competition.

The 2016 Olympic Champion is Ashton Eaton of the United States with 8,893 points. The current official decathlon world record holder is the Frenchman Kevin Mayer, who scored a total of 9,126 points at the 2018 Décastar in France.
