"State of Grace", a 1990 American neo-noir crime film, was directed by Phil Joanou and it does not kill off the main character half way through it. The main character is killed at the end of the movie. The plot follows Terry Noonan. He returns home to New York's Hell's Kitchen after a ten year absence. He soon hooks up with childhood pal Jackie who is involved in the Irish mob run by his brother Frankie. Terry also rekindles an old romance with Jackie's sister Kathleen. Soon, however, Terry is torn between his loyalty to his friends and his loyalties to others.

The film stars Sean Penn as Detective Terry Noonan, Ed Harris as Frankie Flannery, and Gary Oldman as Jackie Flannery. It also features Robin Wright, John Turturro, and John C. Reilly. The screenplay was written by playwright Dennis McIntyre; it was inspired by the activities of the Westies, a real-life gang from Hell's Kitchen, NY. The film's executive producers include Ned Dowd, Randy Ostrow, and Ron Rotholz. The musical score by provided by Ennio Morricone.

This film was not a box office success; its release was overshadowed by that of the similarly-themed "Goodfellas". Nonetheless, "State of Grace" received many positive reviews from critics and the general public. Shot on location in New York City, the film received overall approval since it staunchly "attempted to capture the sense of a city that possessed real urban crime, and the ethnic and territorial distinctions that give it shape".
