The movie sequel "Hannibal" was released in 2001 with Anthony Hopkins reprising his lead role (Lecter). Next, it was followed by two movie prequels: Red Dragon (2002) and Hannibal Rising (2007).

"The Silence of the Lambs" (released February 1991) is a horror thriller directed by Jonathan Demme. It stars Jodie Foster, Anthony Hopkins, and Scott Glenn. It is adapted by Ted Tally from the 1988 novel, 'The Silence of the Lambs' by Thomas Harris. This was Harris' second novel to feature the character of Dr. Hannibal Lecter (a brilliant psychiatrist and cannibalistic serial killer).

In the story, Jack Crawford (Glenn) wants Clarice (Foster), a top student at the FBI's training academy, to interview Dr. Lecter (Hopkins). Lecter is currently serving life behind bars for various acts of murder and cannibalism. Crawford believes that Lecter can help solve an on-going case, and he wants Clarice to get close to Lecter.

Hannibal is set 10 years after "The Silence of the Lambs." It is about Starling's attempts to apprehend Lecter before one of his surviving victims, Mason Verger (Gary Oldman), can capture him.

Also, in the Hannibal series, there has been five films and one TV series created. The films are: "Manhunter" (1986), "The Silence of the Lambs (1991), "Hannibal" (2001), "Red Dragon" ( 2002) and "Hannibal Rising" ( 2007). Later, the television series "Hannibal" was produced; it ran from 2013 to 2015.
