"Food, Glorious Food", written by Lionel Bart, is the opening song from the 1960s West End and Broadway musical (and 1968 film) Oliver! It is sung when the workhouse boys are dreaming and fantasizing about food while going to collect their gruel from the staff of the workhouse.
The musical opens in the workhouse, as the half-starved orphan boys are entering the enormous dining room for dinner. They are fed only gruel, but find some solace by imagining a richer menu, ("Food Glorious Food").

I know every word to this album, loved the play - first saw it in SF in 1962 when a little girl. Grea t question, but got it wrong! I always thought the actual song began with.... Food Glorious Food, What wouldn't we give for? that extra bit more - that's all that we live for! Pease pudding and savaloy, ..." Live and learn!!!
