Richard M. Nixon (1913-1994) was the 37th President of the United States. Although his political career saw him rise from a congressman, senator and Vice President, Nixon never won an election as a governor. In 1962, Nixon had an unsuccessful attempt to be elected governor of California. This defeat came after losing to John F. Kennedy for his bid to become President in 1960. Moreover, the birth of the quote "you won't have Dick Nixon to kick around any more" was what his gubernatorial bid is best remembered for.

Martin Van Buren served as Governor of New York. He was also a Secretary of State. Like Nixon, Van Buren was also a United States Vice President. George W. Bush was the Governor of Texas when he ran for President in 2000.

James Polk was a Governor of Tennessee. He was president from 1845 to 1849.
