Which of these is a name of a ballet inspired by the works of Gilbert and Sullivan?
"Pineapple Poll" is an opera inspired by the music of Gilbert and Sullivan, arranged by the conductor Charles Mackeras (1925-2010) and with choreography by John Cranko (1927-1973).
The storyline is taken from the same work, in the collection known as the "Bab Ballads", that inspired "HMS Pinafore". The original title was the somewhat unfortunate "The Bumboat Woman's Story". Perhaps it should be mentioned here that in context a "Bumboat" merely means a boat used to ferry supplies to ships!
In the balletic version, the ship is called the "HMS Hot Bun" and Pineapple Poll is the titular heroine. It is an amusing tale of cross-dressing, mistaken identity, and, of course, nautical romance.
Premiered in 1951, it has remained popular, and is an especial favourite with the Birmingham Royal Ballet though currently it tends to be performed more by amateur groups. The sparkling score, blending Sullivan's and Mackeras's talents, has, if anything, endured better than the ballet itself.
