The Easter Island Moais (otherwise known as the Easter Island heads) are not one of the seven wonders, as they came in eighth place.

A campaign was started in 2000 to choose new "Wonders of the World" out of 200 existing monuments.

Countries with candidates often had ads to encourage people to vote for the local monument. More than 100 million votes from around the world were cast by phone or through the Internet. The winners were announced on July 7, 2007.

The Chilean representative Alberto Hotus received a letter that told him the Moais came in eighth place. They were, however, "morally one of the New Seven Wonders". Hotus said he was the only one to receive such an apology.

The winners are:

Great Wall of China: the wall in China that stretches 21,196 km (13,171 mi)

Petra: a historical city in southern Jordan

The Colosseum: arena ruins in Rome, Italy

Chichen Itza: a Mayan city in Yucatán, Mexico

Machu Picchu: an Inca citadel in the Cuzco Region of Peru

Taj Mahal: an ivory-white marble mausoleum in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India

Christ the Redeemer: a 30-meter (98-foot) tall statue of Jesus Christ in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Not one of the new wonders, the Great Pyramid of Giza is still an original wonder and was given honorary status.

A few other finalists are the Statue of Liberty (New York, USA), Eiffel Tower (Paris, France), Hagia Sophia (Istanbul, Turkey), and Stonehenge (Amesbury, UK).
