Which of these people co-authored 1848's "The Communist Manifesto"?
"The Communist Manifesto" was a pamphlet written by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels to serve as the platform of the Communist League. It became one of the principal programmatic statements of the European socialist and communist parties in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It opens with the dramatic words "A spectre is haunting Europe - the spectre of communism" and ends by stating, "The proletarians have nothing to lose but their chains. They have a world to win. Workingmen of all countries, unite."
One of its authors, Friedrich Engels (1820-1895) was a German philosopher, social scientist, journalist and businessman. He founded Marxist theory together with Karl Marx. In 1845 he published "The Condition of the Working Class in England", based on personal observations and research in Manchester.
In 1848, he co-authored "The Communist Manifesto" with Karl Marx, though he also authored and co-authored (primarily with Marx) many other works, and later he supported Marx financially to do research and write "Das Kapital".
On 5 August 1895, aged 74, Engels died of laryngeal cancer in London. Following cremation, his ashes were scattered off Beachy Head, near Eastbourne.
