Which of these race horses in 1948 won the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes?
The great horse in 1948 that won the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont Stakes was Citation. Citation (April 1945 – August 1970) was the American Triple Crown-winning Thoroughbred racehorse who won 16 consecutive races in major stakes race competition. He was the first horse in history to win one million dollars.
Owned and bred by Calumet Farm in Lexington, Kentucky, Citation was a bay colt by Bull Lea (USA) from the imported mare Hydroplane (Great Britain), who was by the leading sire Hyperion. The horse was trained by the Hall of Fame inductee Ben Jones and his son, Hall of Famer Horace A. "Jimmy" Jones. Citation was originally ridden by Al Snider and later by Eddie Arcaro and Steve Brooks. In 1959, Citation was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. The horse was also ranked #3 in the Top 100 U.S. Thoroughbred Champions of the 20th Century by Blood-Horse magazine.
