John Lindsay (John Vliet Lindsay, November 1921, New York City, NY – December 2000, Hilton Head Island, SC) was an American politician and lawyer. During his political career, he was a US congressman, mayor of New York City, and candidate for US president. He was also a regular guest host of Good Morning America.
Lindsay graduated from the Buckley School in New York City in 1935, St. Paul's School, Concord, NH in 1940, Yale University, B.A., in 1944, and from Yale Law School, LL.B., 1948. He joined the US Navy in May 1943; he was discharged as a lieutenant in March 1946. He was admitted to the bar in 1949 and began the practice of law in New York City.
From January 1959 – December 1965, he was a member of the US Congress, when he resigned to become mayor of New York City. In 1971, he changed party affiliation to Democrat. He resumed the practice of law in New York after being the NYC mayor.
In the TV show, it focuses on the early 1960s where infamous crime boss Bumpy Johnson returns from 10 years in prison. He finds the neighborhood he once ruled in shambles. His streets are controlled by the Italian mob; Bumpy must take on the Genovese crime family to regain control.
