In the 1978 film "Up in Smoke", Cheech and Chong win the battle of the bands' contest and a recording contract at the end of the movie. They won their contest by performing the song, 'Earache My Eye'. They do this despite having a rough start to their performance. Their win is one where they beat other performers, including the police officers, who get stoned due to a large amount of marijuana smoke coming from a burning van, being funnelled into the contest area.

The song "Earache My Eye" was written by Cheech and Chong for their 1974 "Cheech & Chong's Wedding Album". The guys felt it was the right song to use in their movie for the contest situation. It was produced by Lou Adler, a record and film producer.

Regarding Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong, they make their film debut as Pedro De Pacas and Anthony "Man" Stoner respectively. The storyline has the two guys as anti-establishment counterculture 'stoners' in search of the perfect stash of hash. The guys end up cruising around in a van made of potent pot. Some bumbling local narcotics cops are in hot pursuit of the fun-loving dual. Cheech and Chong weren’t radical … the cops just didn’t know it.

Richard "Cheech" Marin and Tommy Chong found a wide audience in the 1970s and 1980s for their films and stand-up routines. Their performances were based on their knowledge of the hippie and free love era. While acting and singing, they enjoyed focusing on drug culture movements and their love for cannabis.
