The Badshahi Mosque was constructed by the 3rd son of Shah Jahan and successor Aurangzeb in 1673. The Pearl Mosque (Moti Mahal) was built in 1645 and Shalimar Gardens in 1641-1642 by Shah Jahan. The Red Fort in Delhi was constructed by Shah Jahan in 1639. It is the place where the Prime Minister of India addresses the nation on Independence day (15th August). All of these, apart from the Badshahi Mosque, are UNESCO world heritage sites.

Shah Jahan (lived 1592-1666, reigned 1627-1658) was the third son of emperor Jahangir. Khurram Shahab-ud-din Muhammed was given the name Shah Jahan by his father in 1617 after Khurram's military successes against Lodi in Deccan secured the southern border for the emperor. The Taj Mahal, the beautiful mausoleum at Agra was built by Shah Jahan (1649) in memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, whom he married at the age of 20 yrs. He was overthrown by his rebellious son Aurangzeb, who had his father buried in the Taj Mahal beside the tomb of his mother Mumtaz Mahal.
