There was no recurring character named Barney in the 1982 – 1993 U.S. TV series "Cheers". This series is an American TV sitcom that ran on the NBC Network. It provided a total of 275 half-hour episodes across eleven seasons.

The series is about Sam Malone, a former relief pitcher for the Boston Red Sox. He owns and runs Cheers, a cosy bar in Boston. Diane Chambers is a lady who is forced to become a waitress when her fiance jilts her. She constantly bickers with Sam. Eventually, they fall in love. Several wacky characters make the bar their home-away-from-home. Three of the best known are sarcastic waitress Carla, beer-loving accountant Norm, and know-it-all U.S. letter carrier Cliff. A few seasons later, after Diane leaves Boston, Sam sells the bar to buy a boat and sail around the world. But his boat sinks and he returns to bartending. Rebecca Howe, the new and more ambitious manager, hires him back. They love to hate each other but eventually, they get together as a couple.

Within "The Andy Griffin Show" (1960 – 1968), "The Flintstones" (1960 – 1966), and "The Simpsons" (1989 – present), each one includes a TV character named Barney. Barney Fife (Don Knotts) is widowed Sheriff Andy Griffin's well-meaning cousin and deputy on "The Andy Griffin Show". Barney Rubble plays a diminutive caveman and best friend of Fred Flintstone on "The Flintstones". On "The Simpsons", Barney Gumble is the town drunk of Springfield and Homer Simpson's best friend.
