Which play by William Shakespeare has the statement: 'And say to all the world, This was a man!'?
This statement is made in William Shakespeare’s play "Julius Caesar". It is used when Antony talks to Octavius and others saying, “Only he acted from honesty and for the general good. His life was gentle, and the elements mixed so well in him that Nature might stand up and say to all the world, 'This was a man!' According to his virtue let us use him, With all respect and rites of burial." (Act-V, Scene-V). It appears that Antony means to say that the key to knowing Marcus Brutus and his success lies in knowing his true nature, character, personal motivations, and strict moral and ethical beliefs that control his actions when facing opponents. His persona allowed him to recognize and seize any and all opportunities when they arose to benefit to protect the people of Rome.
This quote presents the complex idea of what the Brutus was and what other believed him to be. Here, Antony is trying to win others to his point of view. He wants people to see Brutus as truly honorable and noble and not hypocritical. Nevertheless, all humans must be insightful enough to recognize opportunities granted by fate; and, then they must act in accordance with their true nature as required.
Ultimately, Antony is playing the role of a humble individual of noble standing who can point to Brutus's greatness, fatal flaws, and final legacy. In the end, none of Brutus's misjudgments or even dreadful acts should diminish from any of the important and major accomplishments he made to all of Rome.
