In 1963, the British Secretary of War John Profumo resigned after he had lied to the House of Commons about his sexual affair with Christine Keeler, an alleged prostitute. Keeler was also involved with Yevgeny “Eugene” Ivanov, a Soviet naval attache who was suspected of being a spy. Profumo assured his government that he had not compromised national security. The scandal threatened to end Prime Minister Harold Macmillan’s government. Profumo had to quit in the end.

Halbe Zijlstra was a Dutch Foreign Minister who resigned after admitting to lying about attending a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2006. Zijlstra claimed that he overheard Putin talking about expansionist ambitions. Later, he admitted that he had not met with Putin and borrowed the information from a source. Zijlstra told the Dutch parliament that his actions were “not a smart move and mistake”. He resigned.

Dominique Gaston André Strauss-Kahn (born 1949) was a French politician and a former managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in 2007 - 2011. He became a controversial figure in the French Socialist Party due to his involvement in several financial and sexual scandals.
