Four seasons of the British science fiction series "Blake's 7" were produced by the BBC. Thirteen 50-minute episodes were made each season. The first storyline broadcasts were in the United Kingdom between January 1978 and December 1981. They are set in the third century of the second calendar (this is mentioned in associated publicity material, not in the series). It is a time at least 700 years in the future.

The narrative of Blake's 7 concerns the exploits of political dissident Roj Blake, who commands a small group of rebels. They are tasked with fighting against the forces of the totalitarian Terran Federation. The Terran forces rule the Earth and many colonized planets within the solar system.

In 1991, a poll of science-fiction writers, fans and critics as reported by the World Science Fiction Convention (“Worldcon”) rated "Blake's 7" 25th in popularity in a TV series (The Best of Science Fiction in the Last Quarter of the 20th Century). Many taking the poll agreed with the idea that the use of moral ambiguity and dysfunctional main characters to create tension and long-term plots provided needed cohesiveness and sophisticated clarity.
