Which Scottish darts player has the nickname 'Snakebite'?
'Snakebite' is the nickname of Peter Wright (born 1970), a Scottish darts player who plays in the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC). Wright won the PDC Word Darts Championship in 2020 and 2022.
Although born in Livingston, Scotland, Wright grew up in London, where he discovered his love of darts at the age of 13. In 1995, he qualified for the British Darts Organisation (BDO) World Darts Championship, but lost in the first round. Following this disappointment, Wright stuck to amateur leagues. In 2005, Wright tried his luck in the UK Open, where he was defeated in the third round. Disheartened, he gave up the idea of a professional darts career.
After watching the inaugural 'Grand Slam of Darts' in 2017, Wright realised he had beaten several of the competitors at darts in the past and was encouraged to try again. Wright made his PDC televised debut in 2009 and gradually improved his game, winning his first ranking title in October 2012.
Wright is known for his colourful Mohican hairstyle, which takes 2 hours to prepare, and for his extravagant clothing. He usually has a snake painted on to the side of his head, hence his nickname "Snakebite". When asked about his nickname, Wright said, "I just like snakes. I'm a bit like a snake – I'm a quiet person who likes to be left alone. If you keep poking me, I'll bite you."
