The Doolittle Raid was the first joint mission of the US Army Air Force and the US Navy. The B-25's used in the raid were known as land based bombers. They were stripped of all nonessential parts to lighten their weight, in order to launch from the deck of the aircraft carrier USS Hornet. When news of the secret attack broke, news agencies questioned President Roosevelt about the whereabouts of the home base for the land based bombers, he was elusive in his answer. He had recently read James Hilton's novel "Lost Horizons". He informed the reporters that the bombers had launched from a fictional island from the novel he had recently read. The island's name was Shangri La.

The USS Shangri-La was an Essex class carrier. Her keel was laid on January 15 1943 and the carrier was launched on February 24 1944, christened by Josephine Doolittle, the wife of Colonel Jimmy Doolittle.

After completing sea trials, the carrier was commissioned for service in September 1944. She received two battle stars for service during World War II, participating in the Battle of Okinawa and the Battle of Japan, launching several sorties that bombed key military targets in and around Tokyo. She earned the nickname "Tokyo Express". She later earned three battle stars for service during the Vietnam War after being refitted and designated an anti submarine carrier. The USS Shangri-La was decommissioned July 30 1971.
