Which singer/songwriter wrote the song “Look What They've Done to My Song, Ma", covered by many other artists?
Melanie Anne Safka (born February 3, 1947) is an American singer-songwriter, usually professionally known simply as “Melanie” or as “Melanie Safka”.
She remains best known for the 1971-72 global hit "Brand New Key", her cover of "Ruby Tuesday", her composition "What Have They Done to My Song Ma", and her 1970 international breakthrough hit "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)", inspired by her experience of performing at the 1969 Woodstock music festival. "What Have They Done to My Song Ma", was the reverse side of "Ruby Tuesday", which went on to become a hit in its own right.
Several other artists have produced covers of the song "What Have They Done to My Song Ma", - Daliah Lavi recorded a successful German version of the song in 1971 and Ray Charles released a cover in 1972. Covers by other artists, producing charting successes, include Nina Simone, the New Seekers and Billie Jo Spears. Miley Cyrus released a video of her own acoustic version of the song as part of her “Backyard Sessions” series. In 2015, Melanie joined Miley to duet on the song in addition to "Peace Will Come (According to Plan)".
The song has been recorded in German, French, Czech, Italian and Serbian and has featured as an advertising jingle for several companies over the years - “Lifebuoy” soap, “Ramada Inn” and “Oatmeal Crisp”.
