Which snake imitates a rattlesnake when threatened?
The bullsnakes' home range is extensive and can be found from northern Mexico to the plains of the United States and as far north as central Canada. They are considered to be a subspecies of the gophersnake; both of which, are a non-venomous breed of snake.
The bullsnake is often taken for a rattlesnake and killed. Not only do they resemble a rattlesnake, they also mimic them in their postures and sounds. They don't do this to hunt, but to scare off their predators; such as coyotes and humans.
They can look and sound terrifying to their predators, and put up a very aggressive stance, but will flee the minute it gets a chance. It also will bite - if provoked hard enough.
The bullsnakes' diet consists mostly of small rodents, birds and lizards; but has also been known to eat small rattlesnakes. The bullsnake is very beneficial to our environment and should always be left alone.
