You may find it hard to believe; but, Fort Jefferson which sits on the tiny islet of Dry Tortugas, 70 miles west of the Florida Keys, as well as Fort Zachary Taylor on Key West, kept the Confederacy out of the Florida Keys. Yes, the area of Key West, Florida, which sits at the far western end of the Florida Keys, never came under any type of Confederate control during the Civil War.

According to the city's history, there certainly were some pro-Confederate Southerners inhabiting the city. However, a large part of the population were settlers from New England and people from the nearby Bahamas. They had little interest in leaving the United State for the Confederacy. They did not want to take up arms and be a part of the Rebel army.

Also, everyone in the city was aware the presence of the size able Union military base on the island, Fort Zachary Taylor. This base in conjunction with Fort Jefferson, which was situated on a coral reef 70 miles to the west, assisted in the Union blockade that slowly strangled the Confederacy. Also, records show that at least 40 Union warships were stationed in Key West’s harbor during the war. Over the course of the conflict, vessels from this squadron intercepted more than 200 blockade runners attempting to bring supplies into the Confederacy.

The threat of war was ever present. So, the Union commander in the area expanded fortifications and prepared for a rebel attack from mainland Florida. But, no attack ever materialized.
