Which state has the largest population density in the US (2015 US Census Bureau)?
California is the most populous state in the US with 39,144,818 people. Due to its large size (155,779 square miles), its population density is 251.3 people per square mile. However, the state ranks number 11 in regard to population density.
New Jersey with 8,958,013 people occupying 7354 square miles ranks number 1 with a population density of 1210.1 people per square mile.
New York with 19,795,791 people occupying 47,126 square miles ranks number 7 with a population density of 420.1 people per square mile.
Florida with 20,271,272 people occupying 53,625 square miles ranks number 8 with a population density of 378 people per square mile.

lj degan, the question is regarding US states not cities. You claim that left New York and New Jersey. You may not be aware that there is a New York city in New York state. And there is a Jersy city in the state of New Jersey but no New Jersy city. Cities and states with the same name can be confusing...

Well, California and Florida are states not cities, so that left New York and New Jersey. I went with New Jersey because it is much smaller in size and does have quite a lot of people living in it.
