Which US state is called the Pelican State?
A lot of brown pelicans are found along the coast of Louisiana, that's why the state is commonly referred to as "The Pelican State." This bird has been a symbol of Louisiana since the arrival of early European settlers who were impressed with the pelican's generous and nurturing attitude toward its young.
The brown pelican is the state bird and appears on Louisiana's state flag, great seal, the official state painting (along with many other symbols and icons of Louisiana), and is one of three Louisiana symbols displayed on the U.S. mint's bicentennial Louisiana quarter.

The question is good but the distractors suck. Since pelicans are sea birds it would have made more sense to have other coast states to choose from. Illinois is good but replace Iowa and New Mexico.

ann garton, no. Thats my home state that has the pelican. Specifically the brown pelican. However, there are many Louisiana citizens who jokingly suggest the state bird should be the mosquito!

Not all pelicans call the ocean home there were white pelicans that called klamath lake, in Oregon home I don't know if they still do, but they used to.
