Which state is the 50th and most recent state admitted to the US?
Hawaii is an American state well-known and popular worldwide. It may be considered unique for several reasons besides its wonderful nature and diverse culture. First of all, Hawaii is the "youngest" state in the Union: it received statehood only on the 21st of August, 1959, and became one of the five states to be admitted to the US in the 20th century. Moreover, Hawaii consists only of islands, which is another distinguishing feature. By the way, Hawaii also doesn't belong to any continent.

Josh Dorn Colonialism didn't hit the Hawaiian Islands in the 20th century. It's possible the Spanish arrived in the 16th century, 200 years before British explorer James Cook visited in 1778, when he named them the Sandwich Islands after his sponsor, the 4th Earl of Sandwich. In fact, the Hawaiian state flag even bears the British Union Jack. Within 50 years, European diseases, such as small pox and measles, wiped out half the native population. In the early 1800s, Chinese immigrants introduced leprosy. In the late 1890s, immigrants from Puerto Rico also helped populate the islands to expand the sugar cane industry. By the time Koreans settled in the early 20th century the Kingdom of Hawaii was already a US territory. Colonialism had taken over the islands long before the 20th century. Eager to gain full voting rights, the island residents campaigned and eventually 94% voted for statehood in 1959.

Josh.. time for a wake up call.. we have three more territories, and it's the 21st Century.. Hell, we should annex Mexico too and break it into 13 states.. The United States of North America.

Look up a few things like, colonialism and twentieth century and how it all came about before you go throwing politically motivatated slogans out there that are completely unrelated to the issue at hand. Shocking nothing. Colonialism nothing. Your education, lacking.

You're not the only one disgusted by these comments, Michael. The offensive arrogance of certain people here is beyond belief. And Americans wonder why the rest of the World hates them. Smdh.

William Laughlin Indeed William. I wonder if these arrogant advocates of colonisation would be as keen if the US were still colonised by the British. They have 18th century mindsets so perhaps so! [Joking aside, the ignorance demonstrated above really shocks me. Just wtf.]

Carmine-James Pitaniello They are very lucky to be under our control and protection. PR can make a pretty good argument for statehood. We need Guam and American Samoa for national defense.
I knew some Samoans in the Army. Big dudes, great guys.

lydia lw, Hawaiians voted for statehood to get the benefits of being an actual state. Many do consider Hawaii to be an occupied state for militaristic strategic reasons. Native hawaiians were treated like an underclass by "mainlanders" after world war two. It hasn't been forgotten.

Amazing how such a simple question/answer in what is supposed to be a fun game can turn up so many political biased comments. Geeez....

Having grown up in Alaska we all know she was the 49th state. But an interesting bit of trivia is while both Alaska and Hawaii became states in 1959, Hawaii becoming the 50th state in August resulted in a 49 star flag. It flew for one year and was replaced by the 50 star flag in 1961. I wish I could find a 49 star flag, at a reasonable price that is!

Carmine-James Pitaniello, An interesting thought. But given the status of our current relations, I doubt Mexico would take too keen to the idea. What I like about is then we'd, in effect, be a two language state like Canada, and I think Spanish is a lot easier to learn than French. English is probably the hardest of all, since it's an amalgamation of French, Germanic (Fries), Nordic and Celtic languages. Thank God it'a my mother tongue, so I did not have to learn it as a second language.

williamrlaughlin, Don't forget the very substantial Japanese American population, which contrary to their treatment on the west coast, were for the most part not interned.

Carmine-James Pitaniello, by that reasoning shouldn't we also annex Canada and have 4 sided Manifest Destiny of North America?
