The Great Western Railway's locomotive "City of Truro" was recorded, by the railway journalist Charles Rous-Marten, at over 102 MPH on 9th May 1904, whilst hauling an Ocean Mail train from Plymouth.

The London and North Eastern Railway claims the first authenticated 100 MPH run, over 30 years later, with it's A3 Pacific (4-6-2) "Flying Scotsman". That company also holds the world record for steam traction, 126 MPH, with the A4 Pacific "Mallard".

"Evening Star" was a 2-10-0 freight locomotive and was the last steam engine to be built by British Railways, although another Pacific "Tornado" (See photo) has recently been built by private enterprise.
