In the DC Comics universe, Barbara Gordon is the daughter of Gotham City's Police Commissioner James Gordon and adopts the alter-ego of Batgirl. Barbara Gordon made her debut in 'Detective Comics #359' (January 1967) by writer Gardner Fox and artist Carmine Infantino. There had been an earlier attempt in 1961 to introduce Batgirl to the 'Batman' franchise with the name Betty Kane, but 'Batman' editor Julius Schwartz thought she was an inappropriate character. Later, Betty Kane was adapted into the superhero Hawk Fire.

Barbara Gordon worked as a librarian during the day but operates in Gotham City with Batman in the evening. She is a genius-level computer hacker and an expert martial artist. After working with Batman for several years, Batgirl is shot through the spine by Batman's rival, the Joker in 1988. After this, she adopts the alter-ego Oracle and fights crime from her wheelchair as an international super-hacker. She was later restored as Batgirl during 'The New 52' relaunch of the entire DC publication line in 2011.

In 2003, comic book authors Scott Beatty and Chuck Dixon revised Barbara Gordon’s origin with the mini-series 'Batgirl: Year One'. They portrayed Gordon as a highly gifted child having graduated from high school early, who desires to join law enforcement.

Barbara Gordon has appeared in television series such as 'Batman' and 'Birds of Prey', as well as animated shows, including 'Batman: The Animated Series' and 'The New Batman Adventures'.
