The 1978 - 1982 TV series "Rumpole of the Bailey" is a British television series created and written by the British writer and barrister John Mortimer. It starred Leo McKern as Horace Rumpole, an elderly London barrister and detective who defended a broad variety of clients, often underdogs.

On the show, usually at home, Rumpole had to endure the well-meaning haranguing of his wife. She was a person who was semi-affectionately referred to by Horace as "She Who Must Be Obeyed". This saying is a reference to a line found in the novel "She" by the H. Rider Haggard. With the character of Rumpole, one of his simple vices in life is his love of English literature.

Balancing suspense and satire as deftly as the scale of justice, Horace Rumpole tirelessly defended the downtrodden while redressing members in upper class society. Mixing drama and comedy, the TV show "Rumpole of the Bailey" ended its run on television as one of the most celebrated British courtroom dramas ever to be produced.
