The popular U.S. game show where one could watch celebrities answer questions about "Old Man Periwinkle" and "Dumb Dora" was Match Game ('73-'79). This comedy game show had six celebrities. They tried to match answers with two game contestants and vice versa. All worked to simply fill in answers to blank questions. If the contestants did it well, they were able to win prizes (money).

Match Game as a TV show was revived several times over the course of a few decades. Also a number of clever changes were made. As noted, the game featured contestants trying to come up with answers to fill-in-the-blank questions that were often formed as humorous double entendre. In the '70s, this game was played in 2 rounds. Each opponent was given a choice of two statements labeled either "A" or "B". Rayburn would read each statement. While the contestant pondered an answer, six celebrities wrote their answers on index cards. After they finished, the contestant was polled for his or her answer. Gene Rayburn, the host, then asked each celebrity in turn to respond. The contestant who got the most correct matches was the winner. A money round would then be played.

The original Match Game premiered in December 1962. Rayburn hosted from 1962 – 1982. Johnny Olson served as the show's announcer on the premiere. The show was taped at New York City's Rockefeller Plaza, which was home to NBC's largest New York studio. Critics noted that watching this show was entertaining.
