After signing a non-aggression pact with Germany in August 1939, Stalin the leader of the Soviet Union, felt confident enough to start a war of conquest with Finland. Stalin began by demanding that Finland give up territory between Leningrad and the Finnish border only 32 kilometers away.

The Soviet Army was 3 times larger than Finland's, with 30 times more planes and 100 times more tanks. The Soviets attacked on 30 November 1939, and expected Finland to surrender quickly. Most of the world condemned the USSR's unprovoked attack on the much smaller Finland. To Stalin's great shock, Finland not only held their own, but inflicted massive casualties on the Soviet Army. There are conflicting reports on the Soviet losses, but they were 300 to 500 percent higher than Finland's.

In March of 1940, Finland signed an armistice that forced them to cede 11 percent of their territory to Stalin and the war was over. The Soviets may have won the war, but they did great harm to their military and this may have helped convince Hitler to invade the USSR.
