Although it can technically be applied to a match between any two teams in the Ruhr Valley - an industrial area in the west of Germany - the term "Revierderby" is almost always applied to a match between Borussia Dortmund, and FC Schalke 04; the latter being based in Gelsenkirchen. The term "Revier" is a short form of "Bergbaurevier", which means mining district. Outside Germany the match is also sometimes referred to as the Ruhr Derby.

The match was first contested in 1925, but then there was a hiatus until the next encounter in 1936. Perhaps surprisingly, fixtures continued throughout the Second World War, and in this era, Schalke was by far the most successful team.

However, later Dortmund became the more successful, although Schalke still hold the record for the maximum number of wins. In the 2021-2022 season, the match was not contested in the first division of the Bundesliga, as Schalke were relegated the previous season, however, their subsequent promotion means the old rivalry will be restored.
