At age 25, Richard Nixon auditioned for a community theater production of 'The Dark Tower', where he met Thelma 'Pat' Ryan, a schoolteacher. Richard Nixon proposed to Pat on their first date; she laughed him off. 'I thought he was nuts or something!' she recalled. He courted the redhead he called his 'wild Irish Gypsy' for two years, even driving her to and from her dates with other men. Eventually they married at the Mission Inn in Riverside, California, on June 21, 1940.

Pat campaigned at her husband's side in 1946 when he entered politics, running successfully for a seat in the United States House of Representatives. That same year, she gave birth to a daughter and namesake, Patricia, known as Tricia. In 1948, Pat had her second and last child, Julie.

On their first date, at the Driskill Hotel, Lyndon Johnson proposed to Claudia Alta 'Lady Bird' Taylor. Lady Bird did not want to rush into marriage, but he was persistent and did not want to wait. Ten weeks later, Lady Bird accepted his proposal. The couple married on November 17, 1934, at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in San Antonio, Texas.

After suffering three miscarriages, the couple had two daughters together: Lynda Bird (born in 1944) and Luci Baines (born in 1947). The couple and their two daughters all shared the initials LBJ. The daughters lived in the White House during their teenage years, under close scrutiny of the media.
