Which U.S. city contains a street named after Swami Vivekananda as 'Honorary Swami Vivekananda Way'?
The Chicago Art Institute was the place where the famous Hindu monk Swami Vivekananda addressed the Parliament of the World's Religions in 1893. Opening with the words "My dear sisters and brothers of America", he gave a seminal speech. The words made the audience clap for about two minutes. It was reported that the audience probably expected him to say -- "ladies and gentlemen". The speech was truly groundbreaking and brought Vivekananda overnight fame.
On November 11, 1995, a section of Michigan Avenue, one of the most prominent streets in Chicago that passes in front of the Art Institute was formally renamed "Swami Vivekananda Way". The Art Institute used a bronze plaque to specifically commemorate Swami Vivekananda's historic 1893 speech.
Swami Vivekananda (1863–1902) is best known for introducing Hinduism to America. He called for religious tolerance and an end to fanaticism not only in America. He sought these items worldwide. His beliefs were a major influence on celebrates everywhere such as George Harrison, among others.
