In the 2010 historical romantic drama film "Alleged", Brian Dennehy is given the opportunity to play the lawyer who is Clarence Darrow. This is a film that dramatizes the famous Scopes Trial, known as The State of Tennessee v. John Thomas Scopes. The trial was then commonly called the 'Scopes Monkey Trial'. It was a legal case in July 1925 where a substitute high school teacher, John T. Scopes, was accused of violating Tennessee's Butler Act. The Butler Act had made it unlawful to teach human evolution in any state-funded school.

"Alleged" was directed by Tom Hines and produced by Fred Foote. The screenplay for the movie was written by Foote and Brian Godawa. Along with Dennehy, stars included Nathan West as Charles B. Anderson, Ashley Johnson as Rose Elizabeth, Williams Colm Meaney as H. L. Mencken, and Fred Thompson as William Jennings Bryan. The performers here showed that “Alleged” is a true story of the conflicts that boiled over in 1925. The U.S. society continued to face the issues noted in "Alleged" for decades and decades. Citizens asked about the need for questions on evolution and creation to be asked and answered in the public schools. Also, could a person truly know if he or she had any real effect on or reaction to how his or her world continued to operate?
