George Clinton first served as vice president during Thomas Jefferson's 2nd term as President of the United States. Clinton served as James Madison's vice president from 1809 until his death in 1812. The post of vice president would remain vacant until James Madison's second term.

Clinton was born in 1739, served in the militia during the French and Indian War, began practicing law after the war and became governor of New York in 1777 and served in that post until 1795, then served again as governor from 1801 to 1804. In 1804 he was selected to be vice president for Thomas Jefferson's second term. Clinton sought to run for president in 1808, but Madison's supporters thwarted his efforts when he was nominated as his vice president. Clinton became the first vice president to die in office and the first vice president to serve under two different presidents, the second was John C. Calhoun.
