In December 1983, President Gerald R. Ford played himself in a cameo appearance on the TV show "Dynasty". This was prime-time soap opera about super wealthy people; it presented ideas about the rich and their extravagances that caused the '80s show to climb the top of the Nielsen rating chart.

This show's popularity soared from its beginnings to high heights in the 4th season. Former President Ford agreed to guest star as himself in 1983, along with his wife Betty Ford.

President Ford’s acting debut happened by chance. Dynasty‘s producers had arranged to film the series’ characters mingling with the real crowd at Denver’s Carousel Ball, an annual charity event that drew rich and famous people. While cameras followed the fictional Mr. and Mrs. Blake Carrington (John Forsythe and Linda Evans), the couple bumped into the other guests, Gerald and Betty Ford.

It was "Dynasty" producer Esther Shapiro who asked the former President if he wouldn’t mind greeting the Carringtons. ”You can’t be President of the United States and not be an actor,” Shapiro said. After he got his wife involved, Ford agreed. With Betty in the scene, Ford looked Forsythe squarely in the eye and said, ”Blake, it’s wonderful to see you.”

Henry Kissinger (former secretary of state) was also at the ball; he played himself. He flirted with Alexis Colby (Joan Collins). She quipped, ”Henry, hello. I haven’t seen you since Portofino. It was fun!”
