Which U.S. serial killer, from the state of Washington, escaped twice in Colorado, while awaiting trial?
Ted Bundy, the serial killer who murdered at least 30 women, escaped twice from custody before his final arrest. He was in the state of Colorado and his first escape came when he jumped out of the second-story law library window. His second escape came when he lost enough weight to squeeze through a hole in his cell ceiling.
Bundy's first escape happened while he was in jail in Aspen, Colorado. He was going to stand trial for the murder of Caryn Campbell, a 23-year-old nurse. She was found dead in Snowmass, Colorado in 1975.
Bundy was assisting in his own defense (he actually had attended law school for a short time). He had been allowed to use the law library on the second floor of the courthouse where the prison was located. He also wasn't required to wear shackles or handcuffs while in the library. He noticed it would be easy to escape, according to what he told his prison psychologist, Dr. Al Carlisle.
His second escape, on December 30, 1977, was complex. After being moved to a prison in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, Bundy started to lose weight. He carved around an opening that already existed in the ceiling of his cell (meant for a light fixture). He was able to use the ceiling opening to get to ventilation ducts. He had made it appear that he was still in the cell, sleeping.
Bundy told his attorney at the time that he dropped down from the ducts into one of the guards apartments in the building, he put on the guard's clothes and walked out of the prison.
