Yellowstone National Park was the first national park in the United States and was established on March 1, 1872 by President Ulysses S. Grant. Most of Yellowstone National Park is located in the state of Wyoming with small portions also located in Idaho and Montana. Yellowstone is also widely believed to be the first national park to be designated as such in the world.

Yellowstone Nation Park is known for its wildlife and many geothermal features, most notable of which is Old Faithful geyser, so called because of it regular eruptions (averaging about every 90 minutes). Situated over the Yellowstone Caldera, the park has many features including rivers, lakes, waterfalls, geysers, wildlife and scenic byways.

Native Americans lived in the Yellowstone area for thousands of years and widely believed that the geothermal features held spiritual and medicinal properties. The park spans an area of nearly 3,500 square miles (almost 9,000 square kilometers). The caldera is considered an active volcano is the largest “supervolcano” on the continent.

There are hundreds of species of wildlife in Yellowstone National Park including the largest and oldest bison herd in the United States. There are nearly 4 million visitors to Yellowstone each year.
