The Civil War was America's bloodiest conflict. From 1861 until 1865, the unprecedented violence of battles such as Shiloh, Antietam, Stones River, and Gettysburg shocked citizens and international observers alike. During the war, more than 100 battles were fought in Virginia. It was more than anywhere else. Virginia, first and foremost, where the U.S. Federal and Confederate capitols were only one hundred miles apart, saw great battles and was the site of months of continuous campaigning, patrolling, and guerilla activity. It had Bull Run, the Seven Days Battles, Chancellorsville, and the concluding Battle of Appomattox Court House.

In summary, the U.S. Civil War consisted of nearly 10,500 battles, engagements, and other military actions including nearly 50 major battles and about 100 others that had major significance. The remainder were skirmishes, sieges, reconnaissance actions, naval engagements, bombardments, etc.

All of the engagements were fought in 23 different states and resulted in a total of over 650,000 casualties.

The battles that were fought are divided amongst designated theaters. They included the Eastern Theater, Western Theater, Trans-Mississippi Theater, Gulf Coast, and Sioux (Dakota) Uprising. It was often publicly said, "No one returned from the war the same." The wounds, for those who survived, resulted in terrible burns, blindness, amputation, and lifelong pain and trauma.
