Alan Stuart Franken (born May 21, 1951) is an American writer, comedian, actor, producer, and Democratic politician serving as the junior United States Senator from Minnesota since 2009. He became well known in the 1970s and 1980s as a performer on the television comedy show Saturday Night Live. After decades as a comedic actor and writer, he became a prominent liberal political activist before being elected to the United States Senate in 2008 for the State of Minnesota. He was a popular Democratic senator and easily won re-election in 2014

He attended Harvard College, where he majored in political science, graduating cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in 1973.

In November and December 2017, eight women publicly accused Franken of incidents of misconduct involving women. More than two dozen Democratic senators called on Franken to resign. On December 7, 2017, Franken announced in an address before the Senate that he would be resigning from his office.
