Which US Presidents had wives named Martha?
Martha Dandridge Washington was the wife of George Washington, the first president of the United States. Martha Dandridge was born on June 13, 1731 in the British colony, Province of Virginia. She married George Washington on January 6, 1759. He was not her first husband. Martha Dandridge married Daniel Custis in 1750 when she was 18 years old. They had four children prior to his death in 1757. Daniel Custis was a wealthy planter and at the age of 25 Martha Dandridge Custis was a rich young widow.
Martha Wayles was born on October 19, 1748 in Charles City County, Virginia. Martha "Patty" Wayles married her third cousin Thomas Jefferson in January 1, 1772. He was not her first husband. Martha "Patty" Wayles first married Bathurst Skelton, an attorney, on November 20, 1766. Bathurst Skelton died two years later leaving Martha a very wealthy widow. She inherited Elk Hill Plantation and a great number of slaves. After her marriage to Thomas Jefferson this inheritance enabled them to complete Monticello, Jefferson's 5,000 acre estate. Martha Wayles Jefferson never acted as First Lady of the United States. She died on September 6, 1782. Thomas Jefferson did not remarry. Their oldest child Martha "Patsy" Jefferson often lived with her widowed father after he became the third President of the United States, and held an informal position as First Lady.
