Actress Barbara Billingsley is best known for her role as June Cleaver on "Leave It to Beaver" (1957 - 1963). She was seen as the warm, supportive mother of a pair of precocious boys in the TV sitcom. When the show debuted in 1957, Jerry Mathers, who played Beaver, was 9, and Tony Dow, who portrayed Wally, was 12 years old. Billingsley's character was the perfect stay-at-home of the 1950s; she was always present to gently but firmly nurture her sons through childhood. Because of her personal attire and overall attitude, it seemed as if she could do no wrong. To add to her appeal, she almost always had on a single strand of pearls that fit just right with her idyllic persona as a mother and wife.
