The Congress of Vienna was a meeting of representatives of the Great Powers that were involved in the Napoleonic and French Revolutionary Wars. The congress met in Vienna between November 1814 and June 1815 and was chaired by the Austrian foreign minister, Klemens von Metternich. In attendance of the congress were representatives of the four victorious powers (Great Britain, Austria, Prussia and Russia), France and delegates from other countries and states in Europe.

The congress sought to restore borders and boundaries that were disrupted by the near continuous series of wars that started during the French Revolution and ended with Napoleon's abdication in 1814. In addition, the congress hoped to establish a long-term peace in Europe through dialog between the European powers, it was the first of a series of meetings that would be known as the "Concert of Europe".

The congress did not meet as a formal body, but occurred as a series of informal meetings between the powers' representatives. It was noted for extravagant entertainment, according to a noted joke of the time the congress "did not move, but danced".
