The Revolutions of 1848 was called in some countries "Spring of Nations". Other names applied were "People's Spring", "Springtime of the Peoples" or "Year of Revolutions". As of 2018, the Revolutions of 1848 was the most widespread political upheaval in European history.

France, the Austrian Empire, Hungary, the German states, Italian states, Denmark and other nations were impacted to varying degrees. In France, the revolution resulted in the abolition of the monarchy and formation of the Second Republic. In the Hapsburg-controlled Austrian Empire and Hungary there was a nationalistic angle as well, with the various ethnic groups under Hapsburg rule looking for greater autonomy or even independence.

The Communist League in Germany began agitating for unification of Germany, universal suffrage, abolition of feudalism, and similar middle-class goals. Both middle and working classes shared the same goals but the burden of the casualties was borne by the working class with the direction and drive behind the revolts coming from the middle class.

Political change came to some countries, such as in France and Denmark. Serfdom was eliminated in the Austrian Empire and a representative democracy was established in the Netherlands.
